Solar Home Hub
a solar home hub to bring open energy to rural Rwanda
project type:
product design

Open Energy Labs
We teamed up with Open Energy Labs to create a solar home hub that produces renewable energy for the rural communities of Rwanda. Almost 90-95% of solar home systems stop working after their warranty expires. Due to the challenges of maintenance in remote areas, many of these systems become useless, leading to a significant accumulation of e-waste.
Our primary goal was to develop a solar home hub that is commercially viable, easy to maintain, and open. We also wanted to include educational content that would empower local families, entrepreneurs, and communities. We developed and tested a prototype which includes both a controller and an inverter, paired with an application and an educational booklet. This booklet contains product instructions, informative content on solar energy, and maintenance tips, designed to improve the users' understanding and ability to sustainably manage their solar home systems.
Beyond providing clean and affordable energy, this projected promoted tech-literacy, enabling people to have complete control over the technologies they use, and inspiring sustainability and innovation within their communities.
