Imagination Tool
a set of tools to bring children's voices into the design process

digital experience

As part of our research on Young Futures, we started working on the Imagination Tool, a set of digital and physical assets designed to involve kids in the development of strategies, projects, and foresight.
By using design fiction and speculative futures, the Imagination Tool helps kids imagine and co-create positive visions of different futures. In its digital form, the tool is a web app that presents a randomised question about a future scenario, which kids can answer by using the built-in GenAI text-to-image tool, writing text prompts, and generating images.
The physical version of the tool includes a large dice with future-related questions, a set of cards to help narrow down the scenarios, a paper worksheet with space for drawing, and a few more prompts to help stimulate thinking and set the scene.
We are currently working with academic partners to further develop our GenAI tool, exploring how to adapt image-based AI technology to participatory research with kids, while ensuring safety and usability. These visions can ultimately be translated into insight and hopefully influence those in positions of power to make more informed decisions.
