Interactions with nature during childhood are key to understanding its value in our lives and motivate our future efforts to protect it. However, cities often struggle to provide the kinds of activities that provide their children with these experiences.
As part of Fieldfest, a festival in London focused on optimistic approaches to climate change, we partnered with Field7 to create and curate a series of workshops for children and their families to reconnect with nature in the urban environment.
In the Patch Plants Exploratorium, we created highly tactile and sensorial experiences with plants at the front and centre. Story circles provided a forum for discussing complex topics, while workshops and foraging walks allowed hands-on exploration and learning. And Letters to the Trees encouraged reflection on protecting nature. The event emphasised that connecting with nature can be done in urban areas and can bring families closer together.
